Normal Hours: Opera a la Cart season runs July 2018 through September 2018. Hours are irregular, depending on performance schedule, and include evening and weekend hours in conjunction with Opera performance dates, company events, and related activities.
Portland Opera offers productions of the highest artistic quality, bringing the world of opera to the region. Over the past 52 years, the company has presented more than 200 operas, including world premieres. In addition to its annual season, the company is also renowned for its outreach and educational initiatives, including Portland Opera-To-Go, and its Resident Artists Program, which supports the next generation of opera singers.
Opera a la Cart is Portland Opera’s new mobile performance venue. Inspired by Portland’s food cart culture, Opera a la Cart travels to food cart pods, farmers markets, college campuses, neighborhood festivals and other locations where people gather throughout the Portland metro area, bringing opera directly to the community in pop-up performances. Designed and built by architecture students at PSU, the cart features a fold-out stage and a “menu” of operatic specials du jour, performed by rising young singers from throughout the local area.
In addition to driving the Opera a la Cart truck, the Driver/Technician for Opera a la Cart is responsible for managing and traveling with tour personnel to facilitate performances, ensuring that the stage and equipment are set up properly prior to each show, and securely packed and reloaded into the truck before returning to Hampton Opera Center. The Driver/Technician also makes pre-show announcements prior to each performance.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
REQUIRED / ESSENTIAL
- Knowledge of theatre practices and stage craft
- Reliability, punctuality
- Good driving skills
- Valid driver’s license
- Must be available to work a flexible, varied schedule for the entire Opera a la Cart season
The ideal candidate will also be comfortable addressing audiences in public spaces, and have experience driving a box truck.
