Reports To: Associate Director of Marketing and Audience Development
Normal Hours: Regular Hours: 9:00am-5:00pm Monday-Friday. Typical work week is 37.5 hours. Duties may occasionally require additional evening or weekend hours, in conjunction with company events and/or projects.
Portland Opera offers productions of the highest artistic quality, bringing the world of opera to the region. Over the past 52 years, the company has presented more than 200 operas, including world premieres. In addition to its annual season, the company is also renowned for its outreach and educational initiatives, including Portland Opera-To-Go, and its Resident Artists Program, which supports the next generation of opera singers.
As we prepare to enter our 2018 season, Portland Opera is experiencing dynamic growth and exciting organizational changes. For that reason, we are seeking a graphic design rock star to join our External Affairs team and fill the newly created position of Graphic Designer.
The Graphic Designer will be a key member of the External Affairs Department. In this role, you will serve as an advisor in strategic branding conversations pertaining to the look, feel and identity of Portland Opera, and collaborate with department teams to create the visual brand and standards for all Portland Opera print, digital and public collateral.
As Graphic Designer, you will also manage all arts marketing and digital assets, oversee the design and production of advancement communications, serve as a company-wide resource for the creation of custom print and digital projects, and help to ensure the integration of Portland Opera branding.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
REQUIRED / ESSENTIAL
- Minimum 5 years of graphic design experience with high-end print magazines
- Minimum 2 years of publishing experience designing multi-page layouts with heavy text
- Excellent knowledge of graphic production process
- Expert knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite

- Strong creative, organizational, problem solving and time management skills
- Adaptable and quick learner
- Able to apply style guides creatively while upholding brand identity
The ideal candidate will also have experience with, and knowledge of, the performing arts in the City of Portland: Music, Dance, Theater. A degree in Graphic Design degree is preferred.
