PORTLAND OPERA TO GO TAKES
ROSSINI’S CINDERELLA & OPERA IMPROV
ON THE ROAD TO SCHOOL CHILDREN
ALL OVER OREGON!

“…The old wrongs have vanished from my mind.  My revenge shall be…to forgive you!”
Cinderella, adapted by Randall Stuart

Portland, Ore. – Portland Opera To Go, the touring division of Portland Opera’s Education and Outreach Program, hits the road with an enchanting, kid-friendly production of Rossini’s Cinderella and the popular Opera Improv program.  The traveling troupe in the big white Portland Opera van will visit 48 different schools for 73 performances over 10 weeks across Oregon.  Beginning January 14, 2009 in The Dalles, the tour will visit communities in all corners of the region, from Baker City to Klamath Falls, before concluding in Beaverton on March 26, 2009.

“The Portland Opera To Go tour is one of the Company’s most important endeavors,” says Portland Opera General Director Christopher Mattaliano.  “This tour allows us to bring the power and beauty of opera to thousands of children throughout the region,” he continues.  “Some of these students have never been exposed to a live theatrical performance.  Thanks to our tour sponsors, this is our gift to those children and their future.”

Approximately 15,000 students participated in the 2007/08 Portland Opera To Go tour.  This Season’s tour circuit will bring opera to many new towns in Oregon, reaching similarly impressive numbers of students.

Portland Opera’s 50-minute, English language version of Rossini’s brilliantly funny re-telling of Cinderella is sure to delight students and provide a thrilling entrée into the rollicking world of opera.  Designed for audiences aged kindergarten through sixth grade (though enjoyed by the kid in all of us), the touring production comes complete with sets, costumes and some of the most exciting young opera singers the Northwest has to offer.  Cinderella performances include classroom visits by our teaching artists, along with a curriculum developed specifically for the opera, which meet Oregon benchmarks in literature, the arts and other disciplines.  Cinderella is directed by Kristine McIntyre and adapted by Randall Stuart.

Opera Improv offers students the opportunity to learn the elements of opera and help create their own “mini-opera” in a “Choose Your Own Adventure” format.  Lively, informative, unexpected—but most of all, fun—this 50-minute, highly interactive assembly is designed to fit seamlessly into any school schedule and space.  Conceived and directed by Kristine McIntyre, Opera Improv also includes a curriculum introducing the building blocks of opera.

In addition to the daytime school events, an evening benefit concert is scheduled at the Elgin Opera House (100 N. 8th Ave, Elgin, OR), February 8 at 7:00pm.

A free public performance of Cinderella is schedule at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts (PCPA, 1111 SW Broadway) in the lobby Rotunda, March 9 at 12:00pm.

Locally, four public performances of Cinderella are scheduled at The Hampton Opera Center, Portland Opera Studio (211 SE Caruthers, just south of OMSI) on March 26 and 27 (7pm) and March 28 (1pm and 4pm).
