Press Release: Portland Opera Celebrates Tilikum Crossing Grand Opening

Portland Opera will celebrate the opening of the Tilikum Crossing with two special public events. The company’s headquarters, the Hampton Opera Center at 211 SE Caruthers, which is immediately adjacent to the new bridge on the east side of the Willamette River, will be the site for the events.

On Sunday, August 9 from 1:30 to 3:30pm, a brass quintet will serenade bicyclists and pedestrians as they cross the bridge during the “People’s Preview” that afternoon. The quintet will be stationed on the Hampton Opera Center’s third-floor deck and will play highlights from popular operas, arranged for wind band.

On Saturday, September 12, Portland Opera joins the grand opening celebration with “A Day and a Night at the Opera.” Highlights of the day include a two-hour session of “Great Opera Choruses in Rehearsal,” featuring the 40-voice Portland Opera Chorus and including an “I Sang with Portland Opera” opportunity for attendees; three 30-minute performances by the company’s six Resident Artists for 2015-16; costume and properties displays from recent productions; and hands-on children’s activities.

In the evening, the Opera hosts a screening of A Night at the Opera, the classic Marx Brothers film in which Harpo, Chico, and Groucho decimate a performance of Il Trovatore, leaving a hilarious shambles in their wake. The film will be shown at 7pm, with the doors opening at 6:30 for general admission seating.

All “A Day and a Night at the Opera” activities are free of charge and open to the general public. The full schedule is shown below.

Also at the Hampton Opera Center, All Classical Portland will offer complimentary tours of its beautiful new home between 11am and 4pm. Get an inside look at how a radio station works while admiring such unique features as a custom-designed world map showcasing listenership around the globe and a glass-walled announcer’s booth overlooking the Willamette River.
