NEW PORTLAND OPERA MARKETING TEAM IN PLACE AND LOOKING TOWARD THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON

(Portland, Ore.) — Portland Opera General Director Christopher Mattaliano has announced the appointment of Mark Tiarks as the company’s Director of Marketing and Communications, effective immediately. Tiarks served for more than ten years as the Santa Fe Opera’s Director of Planning and Marketing, in addition to prior appointments as the General Director of Chicago Opera Theater, Artistic Administrator and Director of Development at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and Producing Director at Chicago’s Court Theatre.

“I’m delighted that Mark Tiarks has joined the Portland Opera senior management team,” said General Director Christopher Mattaliano. “He has an exceptional track record in increasing attendance and deepening community involvement in new and innovative ways everywhere he has worked. During Mark’s tenure at the Santa Fe Opera, ticket revenues increased by more than 60% and sales to American and world premieres more than doubled. As we look towards the company’s upcoming 50th Anniversary Season and beyond, his skills in strategic planning, audience development and community outreach will be invaluable to Portland Opera.”

STREET FAIR BEGINS AT 5:00PM

All Proceeds to Benefit Portland Opera’s Education and Outreach Efforts

(Portland, Ore) – Portland Opera’s 48th Season begins once again on a spectacular note with a jam-packed evening the audience won’t soon forget.  Last season, BIG NIGHT, the Company’s first ever concert of opera’s greatest hits and the free simulcast outdoors exceeded all expectations.  A hit with both the audience inside Keller Auditorium and the hundreds sitting out watching the concert simulcast on huge screen hung on the front of the building; it was a big night in many ways. The season’s concert will again feature all that is big and beloved in opera—the hits, the voices, the choruses, the orchestra.

A surprise last year — and a BIG hit — the pre-concert STREET FAIR returns with emcee Sasha Roiz from Grimm and musical treats that include the Vagabond Opera and theRose City Swing Band. There will be plenty of bike racks and food carts  (Bro Dogs, Fuego de Lotus, Taco Pedaler, Ruby Jewel Ice Cream) on hand too. The  post-concert showing of The Marx Brothers A Night at the Opera will take place again simply because it was so much fun last year.

Portland, Ore. – Portland Opera To Go, Portland Opera’s state-wide educational tour, hits the road soon with an enchanting, family-friendly production of Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel.  The 50-minute, English language revival will be directed by Portland Opera General Director Christopher Mattaliano with sets by Polly Robbins and costumes by Portland Opera’s Rae Minten.

The travelling troupe in the big white van will visit more than 50 schools around the region.  From the Oregon coast on the west to Ontario on the east, it is one of the largest arts education and outreach tours on the West Coast.  Beginning in January 2012 in Portland, it will include 70 in-school and public performances throughout the state—more than half of which will be heavily subsidized or presented free of charge for families and disadvantaged schools and students.
