THE SERIAL SEDUCER

His romantic conquests are so numerous, his sidekick needs a whole aria to list them! But when a father stands between him and the woman he's attempting to seduce, Giovanni murders him and finds himself haunted by the man's ghost. Yet in his moment of judgement, the Don stands unrepentant.

From its spine-tingling first chord to its final bars, Mozart's take on Don Juan, the charismatic anti-hero, is considered by many to be the greatest opera of all time. Charles Gounod, the composer of Faust, called it "a work without blemish, of uninterrupted perfection."

Sung in Italian with English projections above the stage.

THE TEMPESTUOUS DIVA
When her lover, Cavaradossi, faces execution for aiding a political prisoner, Tosca must make an unthinkable choice: submit to the loathsome Baron Scarpia, chief of police ... or send her true love to the firing squad. Her decision brings the opera to a breathtaking climax.

A passionate tour de force, Puccini's thriller has been beloved by audiences since its premiere. Don't miss the revival of this truly grand production, which critics have called "thrilling" and "a Tosca to remember."

Sung in Italian with English projections above the stage.

THE NOBLE CRUSADER

Outside Jerusalem, Rinaldo, the knight, stands alongside his troops in preparation for battle. When Argante, the Saracen king, and Armida, his sorceress queen, kidnap Rinaldo's beloved, he must overcome a series of battles and trials to save her — trials including mermaids, spirits, and dragons!

This opera, full of sorcery, seductions, and secret disguises — composed in 1711, Handel's first for the London stage — catapulted the composer to stardom. Portland Opera brings it to you for the first time, with new costumes and sets designed especially for the intimate Newmark Theatre. Portland Baroque Orchestra joins us again in the pit, repeating their wildly successful 2009 collaboration with us on La Calisto.

Sung in Italian with English projections above the stage.

THE ROGUISH KNIGHT

Sir John Falstaff attempts to woo two married women, hoping to improve his financial situation (and, as a bonus, his love life). Unfortunately, things don't go quite as he planned: he's thwarted by the merry wives of Windsor at every turn! But whether he's berated by forest demons or thrown into the Thames, Falstaff retains his sense of humor — and his joie de vivre — to the very end!

One of Verdi's only comedies, his final masterpiece is often called the finest operatic comedy ever written. Based on scenes from Shakespeare's Henry IV and The Merry Wives of Windsor, the opera's clever libretto and brilliant orchestration will have you rolling in the aisles!

Sung in Italian with English projections above the stage.
