SALOME

NOVEMBER 1, 3m, 7, 9, 2013

Salome's lust for an imprisoned man, coupled with her stepfather's lecherous desires, result in John the Baptist's severed head on a plate.

Powerful, intense, salacious — since its premiere in 1905, Strauss' retelling of this biblical tale continues to shock and thrill audiences, and features one of the most demanding roles in all of opera.

An all-new production featuring celebrated Metropolitan Opera soprano Kelly Cae Hogan. Opera Now applauded "the lovely Kelly Cae Hogan (as Salome) whose powerful voice carried the drama."

Sung in German with English translations projected above the stage.

LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR

JANUARY 31, FEBRUARY 2m, 6, 8, 2014

Lucia's love, fanned into madness by an unsympathetic brother, leaves her new bridegroom in a puddle of blood.

This tragic masterpiece, with its ravishing melodies and vocal thrills (as well as a secret rendezvous, a duel, and a murder) is Donizetti's crowning achievement, and one of the most beloved operas ever composed.

Internationally acclaimed coloratura soprano Elizabeth Futral makes her Portland Opera debut as Lucia. The New York Times called Ms. Futral "vocally luminous, emotionally vulnerable and brilliant," and praised her "mesmerizing combination of vocal elegance and expressive ferocity."

Sung in Italian with English translations projected above the stage.

POSTCARD FROM MOROCCO

MARCH 21, 23m, 27, 29, 2014

Seven travelers find themselves waiting together in a train station, each with their own story, secrets, and luggage. As they describe their belongings to fellow passengers, they begin to unpack their personal secrets. With each revelation, there is a deep exploration of identity and morality that is both delightful and deeply stirring.

Dominick Argento is a Pulitzer Prize and Grammy© Award winner and Postcard From Morocco is lyrical and delightfully fresh, drawing influences from every type of music, from Wagner to ragtime.  Kevin Newbury, whose work on Galileo Galilei was called “vivid and entertaining” by Oregon Music News, returns to direct.

In the intimate Newmark Theatre, the ensemble cast and chamber orchestra will capture your imagination.

THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE

May 9, 11m, 15, 17, 2014

A young apprentice's overzealous passion for his duty ends in an absurd meeting of pirates, policeman and of course, the girl he loves.

Our staging of this whimsical tale of comic adventure on the high seas is inspired by the hit production in Ashland and reimagined for the Keller stage. Bill Rauch (Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Artistic Director) makes his Portland Opera directorial debut. Under Rauch's direction the production was praised by The Oregonian as "an effortlessly freewheeling romp."

Sung in English with projections above the stage.
