Director of Production

We are seeking a Director of Production to join the leadership team of Portland Opera.

About the position:

The Director of Production manages all Production related departments, staff and projects, and is responsible for planning, preparation, coordination, management and supervision of all Production operations, including financial oversight and budgeting of all production-related elements. 

EXPERIENCE: 

  • Complete understanding of theater techniques and processes
  • Intermediate or greater proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
  • Working knowledge of standard accounting principles
  • Able to lead and work with a team
  • Highly self-motivated
  • Able to manage multiple projects in a production environment
  • Working knowledge or greater of VectorWorks or similar CAD program

Position: Director of Production

Status: Full-time/Regular/Exempt

Reports to: General Director

Supervises:

Set, Costume, Lighting and Wig/Make-up Designers; Technical and Production Director; Stage and Production Manager; Production Coordinator; Props Director; Costume Director; Wig and Makeup Supervisor; Other Seasonal production employees

Liaises with: Senior Department Directors and Facilities Manager

Normal hours: Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (37.5 hours per week) During performance season, additional hours, including evenings and weekends, are required.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Production manages all Production related departments, staff and projects, and is responsible for planning, preparation, coordination, management and supervision of all Production operations, including financial oversight and budgeting of all production-related elements. 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Personnel

  • Recruits, engages, manages and directs all Production Department personnel
  • Prepares and executes production department employment contracts
  • Prepares and tracks performance evaluations
  • Educates staff on company personnel policies
  • Ensure that the personnel policies are carried out and that the Production Department functions smoothly and efficiently in collaboration with other areas of the company

Production Administration

  • Reviews, recommends, and negotiates, contracts for incoming production rentals and co-productions
  • Determines the Design Development calendar, communicates and enforces relevant deadlines
  • Engages designers to produce physical productions of the highest possible artistic merit and technical standards within the scope of the company’s budgets

Technical and Production Operations

  • Administers personnel arrangements for each production
  • Oversees and conducts production-related communication with theatre and unions, organizes and leads collective bargaining with those unions
  • Establishes and maintains contact with designers, directors, renting ("producing") companies and others required to plan, schedules and implements shipping, delivery, setup and operation of scenery and stage properties for season productions

Contracts/Agreements

  • Negotiates, prepares, and executes contracts for all Production department employees and contractors, production rentals and co-productions, and foreign company transactions

Finance

  • Prepares budgets, forecasts and expense reports for all production activities
  • Approves disbursements, reviews and authorizes all purchases and labor-related paperwork
  • Consults with other departments to create long-range and multi-year budgets

 Special Operations

  • Establishes and sets facility and production rental and co-production policies, rates, procedures
  • Maximizes revenue and return from rental activities

Interdepartmental responsibilities

  • Advises General Director on contractual and employment matters
  • Assists Development department with grant proposals by providing requested production-related information and materials as needed
  • Coordinates with the Marketing department on marketing materials by providing information about the current/upcoming season and productions, offering input and feedback as materials are being developed, and proofreading for accuracy of Production-related details

JOB CONDITIONS

The DoP has a wide variety of duties, both inside and away from the office.  Roughly 85% of the workday is spent either on the phone or working at a computer workstation.  The work area has natural light and a combination of fluorescent and incandescent lighting.

EQUIPMENT USED: In addition to computer workstation and telephone, the Producing Director uses reproduction devices and office tools typical of an office environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Position requires extended periods of sitting. Some concentrated data entry using computer keyboard and mouse is required. Phone work is intermittent and usually not for prolonged periods of the workday. Occasional lifting tasks are required and are limited to 40 pounds or less without assistance. The DoP's desk, computer and seating are not shared and can be adjusted to make them more ergonomically comfortable.

Compensation/Benefits

  • Compensation Structure: This position offers an exempt salary of $85,000 + per year, dependent on experience, with the below benefits:
