George Manahan

Music Director

Describe what you do for Portland Opera

Conduct productions at Portland Opera.  Help in the choice of repertoire and casting of singers.

Maintain the quality and musical standards of the orchestra.

What music/book/movie/show/poem/place/moment is currently inspiring you?

In the current pandemic the music of Bach and Handel (especially Handel’s operas) have been uplifting.

My wife and I are also completely hooked on watching reruns of The West Wing.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A musician.  I wasn’t sure if I would be a pianist, a teacher, or conductor, as long as it was music.

In my free time, you can usually find me...

Reading books, usually world history, or biographies. Or I am on the tennis court.

What has your favorite quarantine activity been?

Cooking!  Lots of cooking, usually suggested recipes from The New York Times

What is your favorite Portland Opera memory?

There are so many, but one very special memory is our production of SWEENEY TODD!
