Overview

Seville, Spain: Carmen is a factory worker, free spirit, and the toast of the town. She is brave, beautiful, and independent. She does what she wants. She falls in and out of love. Then, her obsessed ex violently and tragically rejects her choice to move on.

Production Information

With melodic gems like the Habanera and the Toreador Song, Carmen is a cultural touchstone. 

This new production is Carmen like you've never experienced it: with original stage direction by Denyce Graves, one of the most beloved and celebrated Carmens of all time. This timeless and refreshing production of Bizet’s iconic masterpiece was co-created by The Glimmerglass Festival and Minnesota Opera, and is directed and choreographed by Eric Sean Fogel. This production features flamenco guitarist Berto Boyd, in a collaboration with Flamenco Pacifico. 

Carmen is sung in French with live English captions. This production features the Portland Opera Chorus and Orchestra.

In addition to the ticketed performances at Keller Auditorium, digital access will be available for a limited time on Portland Opera Onscreen. Digital passes are available for $50, 22/23 subscribers get discounted access for $40. Purchase a digital pass here.

Carmen Onscreen premieres on Thursday, December 8th and expires on Friday, January 20th. Digital passes go on sale on Tuesday, November 29.

Captions: For patrons who are deaf or hard of hearing, each performance (whether virtual or in person) includes live English captions projected above the stage, or streamed virtually on the screen.

Audio Description: For patrons who are blind or have low-vision, the Sunday matinee performance will include a live audio description of the action and dialogue onstage.
