Porgy and Bess

Both celebrated and debated since its 1935 premiere, Porgy and Bess remains one of the most influential and complex works in the American operatic canon. Featuring a groundbreaking score that blends jazz, blues, gospel, folk music, and spiritual traditions, the opera creates a vivid portrait of life within the tight-knit Catfish Row, as imagined in DuBose Hayward’s 1925 novel Porgy, and based on residents of the Gullah community of South Carolina. Through unforgettable songs arranged by Russell Garcia (known for the seminal 1959 Ella Fitzgerald/Louis Armstrong rendition) the work explores love, resilience, addiction, faith, and the struggle for dignity amid hardship. 

At the center of the story is the relationship between Porgy and Bess, two individuals searching for connection and stability in a world shaped by poverty, violence, and social inequity. Their journey unfolds within a community whose bonds offer both protection and pressure, revealing the complicated ways people rely on one another to survive. 

A landmark of Black artistic representation, Porgy and Bess continues to spark important conversations about authorship, portrayal, and cultural legacy. Its music has profoundly shaped generations of performers across opera, jazz, and popular music. At once intimate and expansive, the opera endures because of its emotional honesty, iconic score, and powerful examination of the human need for belonging, compassion, and hope. 

As Portland Opera continues to navigate our SOS fundraising campaign KEEP PORTLAND OPERATIC, we are committed to maintaining artistic excellence while simultaneously exercising fiscal responsibility. Our production of Porgy and Bess will be staged as a live radio show – that means that our singers and musicians will be grouped together onstage, replicating the feel of a radio studio, including the use of a foley artist! While dynamic, this production will not have the benefit of extensive sets.
